Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about teaching in Thailand, TEFL certification, and living as an expatriate in this beautiful country.

What are Thai schools like?

Thai schools vary greatly depending on whether they are public, private, or international. Public schools are generally more traditional, with larger class sizes and a more formal atmosphere. Private and international schools often have smaller class sizes, more resources, and a greater emphasis on English-language instruction. The atmosphere in Thai schools is typically friendly and respectful, with a strong focus on respect for teachers and the value of education.

You can watch videos of Thai classrooms online to get a better sense of the teaching environment and what to expect.

Do I need to be able to speak Thai?

No, you don't need to speak Thai to teach English in Thailand. In fact, in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom, the use of Thai is discouraged. The classroom should be an English-only environment to encourage students to immerse themselves in the language. TEFL One’s training provides you with the skills necessary to teach English effectively without using the students’ first language.

Outside the classroom, learning some basic Thai can be very helpful for everyday interactions. TEFL One includes basic Thai language instruction in its program to help you communicate outside of the classroom and better integrate into Thai society.

How can I check if a TEFL school is complying with all legal requirements?

It’s important to ensure that any TEFL school you consider is fully licensed and compliant with local regulations. Here are a few things to look for:

  • The school should be licensed by the Thai Ministry of Education (MoE). If a school claims it doesn’t need this license, it’s a red flag.
  • Check for visible proof of the school's permission to operate TEFL programs. This should be available on their website or upon request.
  • Look for transparency about their trainers, staff, and facilities. Schools that operate only online or from temporary facilities may not be compliant.
  • Verify the school’s physical address to ensure it’s a legitimate educational institution, not just a rented office or virtual address.

Do I need a Bachelor’s degree to teach in Thailand?

While a Bachelor’s degree is not a requirement to take a TEFL course, it is generally needed to obtain a non-immigrant B visa and work permit, which are required to work legally as a teacher in Thailand. Some schools might hire teachers without a degree under certain conditions, such as classifying them as teaching assistants or through non-formal educational institutions.

However, having a degree increases your employment opportunities and potential salary. For those without a degree, options may include teaching in non-formal schools or finding online teaching positions.

What’s the difference between CELTA and TEFL?

CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is a specific brand of TEFL certification focusing primarily on teaching adults in a language school setting. It is highly regarded in Europe. TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), on the other hand, is a more general certification that can cover teaching both children and adults in various educational settings, including schools and language centers across Asia.

TEFL One’s program is designed to provide the skills needed to teach a wide range of age groups and educational contexts, from kindergarten to adults.

Will I need any vaccinations before I arrive?

There are no mandatory vaccinations required to enter Thailand. However, it is advisable to ensure that your routine vaccinations (such as MMR, Tetanus, and Hepatitis A and B) are up to date. Consult with a healthcare provider for the most current recommendations based on your personal health needs.

What are healthcare facilities like in Thailand?

Thailand has a robust healthcare system with many hospitals, clinics, and dental offices offering services comparable to Western standards. In major cities like Chiang Mai and Bangkok, many medical professionals speak English and have received training abroad. Healthcare is generally affordable, and private hospitals offer excellent services with shorter wait times.

How easy is it to travel around Thailand and Southeast Asia?

Traveling around Thailand and Southeast Asia is straightforward and affordable. Thailand has a well-developed public transportation system, including buses, trains, and domestic flights. Neighboring countries are easily accessible by plane, and there are also options for overland travel via buses and trains.

What are the challenges of living and working in Thailand?

While living and working in Thailand is generally safe, there are challenges such as adjusting to cultural differences, the tropical climate, and language barriers. The Thai culture is very gentle and emphasizes respect and non-violence, but it’s important to exercise common sense and caution in everyday situations, especially in crowded places and while traveling. Understanding local customs and laws can also help avoid misunderstandings and ensure a smooth stay.

Why don’t you offer an online TEFL course?

TEFL One believes that effective teaching, especially in a non-native speaking country, requires practical skills and cultural awareness that cannot be fully acquired through an online-only course. Additionally, many reputable employers prefer or require a TEFL certification obtained through an in-person course due to the hands-on teaching experience it provides.

Our program includes real classroom teaching practices and cultural immersion activities that help trainees develop a deeper understanding of the local teaching environment, which is crucial for a successful teaching career.

What support does TEFL One provide after completing the course?

TEFL One offers extensive post-course support, including job placement assistance, resume building, and interview preparation. Our team works closely with a network of schools and educational institutions in Thailand and abroad to help our graduates find suitable teaching positions. We also provide ongoing support to ensure a smooth transition into your new teaching role.
